BackFeed (Feedback column)
And yes, here are some letters. Many thanks to those
who took the time to write in.Hopefully, there will be
many more. So write in NOW! if you haven't done it yet.
Q- When using the hardware scrolling commands,
my graphics jump after a couple of pixels.
Also, my blitter objects wander slighlty .Why ?
Adrian Barnes
A- You are still using the old version of the STE
extention by Asa Burrows. Get Issue 1 of SteStosTerone
and in the extention folder you will find Version 4.
Once installed, on launching STOS you will see the
STE EXTENTION V4.- being loaded.

Q- When using Control, I can't get the backgroung to
update automaticaly.
Anonymous
A- Dear Anonymous,
As far as I know, you are right. all the backgrounds have
to be manually redrawn.
In practice this means that we must save the screen area
where the sprite is to be displayed, then merge the sprite
onto the screen and display the completed screen.
Then we must recopy the saved background over the previous
sprite, save the area where the next sprite will be,
and finally merge the next sprite onto the screen.
Then screen swap, and do the whole thing again.
For simple backgrounds, I tend to keep a spare copy of
the whole playfield area in memory,if memory allows.
I can than just recopy any area that had a sprite on it,
before the new sprites are displayed.
The advantage is that I don't have to save many tinny bits
of background during the program, and paste them back.
I only have to do the pasting, resulting in less
processor time being used
CHECK THE *BIGCOPY* COMMAND !!!! (CONTROL)
There is plenty on this subject in this issue, so read on!

Q- What is Asa Burrows doing? He wrote the STE,
Blitter, Quartet extentions, and then just vanished. I sent
in my registration money, but didn't get anything back
D.Phillips
A- As far as I know, all Asa's stuff you mention is
available in the PD libraries. He doesn't support the
packages, nor asks for financial payment.
In fact the original registration system was stopped
because of the low level of interest.
Shame, the Blitter and STE extentions were only crude,
and a Pro Version was planned.
This would have included blitter sprites, and multiple
independant hardware scrolling zones.
Asa did approach Atari and Mandarin , when they released
all the new STEs with STOS bundeled in the package.
Atari was not very forthcoming in helping the
idea further.
At present Asa is heading a programming team for a
printing company, developping in house PC software.
As for the future, the same programming team is working on
the possibility of a Games Creator for Windows and
Macintosh. Far distant in the future....

Q- What happened to "STOSSER"?
P.Brown
A- Keefy, Tony Greenwood , Colin GFF and me
did not hear anything from BOB (the editor)
for many months.
SteStosTerone is not a replacement for Stosser,
but a complement for those interested in things
STE.
As for Stosser, there has been a new issue, with
a new Editor, but it won't be monthly anymore.

Don't just read >>>>>> WRITE !!!!
Most diskmags suffer from a one way dialogue. We want you
to write in with what you think .
Without feedback, this is all very sad. After all, noone is
making money doing a diskmagazine. At least write to say hello.
Even better, write in with problems or source code, or both.
If we can help, we will. And more source code is a great Bonus
for all readers !
Articles are also welcome, but I would prefer it if they are STE
related. It can be game reviews, news, or whatever you care
to send in.
If you are sending in an STE Programming article, then please
include some demo source code. After all most people learn better
with practical examples.
Any letters if any, may be included, and/or answered in the next
issue of "BackFeed".
If you have "ORIGINAL!!!!!" tracker MOD files, quartet files, or
graphics that you would like to see published by SteStosTerone,
send it in, and the best stuff will be relesed in the next issue.
NO RIPPING ! ONLY YOUR OWN MATERIAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
